14 Cat-Friendly Human Snacks
While most human foods aren’t apt for cats, felines and humans share a similar affinity toward quite a few people’s foods. Keep in mind that some of these human snacks are harmless only when fed once in a while. They should be a bi-weekly or once-a-week treat and not be given as a replacement for cat food.
Fish
Fish with many fats and oil like mackerel and tuna are good for a cat’s brain, eyesight, and joints.
Cheese
Cheese, cottage cheese, especially, is high in calcium and protein to be given to cats once in a while along with fish and meat.
Carrots
Cooked carrots are a great source of vitamin A for a cat. Though they don’t necessarily have to eat vegetables, it can make for a tasty snack once in a while. Carrots can be boiled whole and given to cats so they can gnaw on them.
Berries
Berries are high in antioxidants and low in sugar so that they can make for tasty treats. Cats especially enjoy strawberries and blueberries. Cats might not like other berries like black currants and blackberries as they are very low in sugar.
Bananas
The potassium in bananas is very beneficial for cats. But one needs to exercise restraint while feeding cats bananas as they contain quite a bit of sugar.
Melons
Melons like seedless watermelons and cantaloupes are high in vitamins A and C. But again, they are high in natural sugars so that they can be given to cats sparingly.
Meat
Lean meat like chicken and turkey is an excellent source of protein intake for cats. Red meat like beef can be given once in a while. But it has to be made sure that the meat is unprocessed. Cooked and boiled meat without seasoning is the best. Avoid hamburgers and cold cuts as they contain sodium.
Pumpkin
Pumpkin contains a lot of fiber and is very good for cats with digestive issues like constipation. It can be pureed for easier consumption.
Eggs
Eggs are quite beloved by cats. Plus, they are packed with proteins and B-vitamins. But make sure only to give the cat cooked eggs, as raw eggs may carry disease-causing bacteria like E.Coli and salmonella.
Rice
A little amount of white rice now and then is good for a cat’s digestive issues.
Spinach
Considered a super-food for humans, it is just as beneficial for cats, but only in small doses. Cooked spinach can be given to cats once or twice a week. But cats with kidney problems shouldn’t be given spinach.
Oatmeal
Oatmeal is a nutrient-packed dish for a cat as it contains iron, plenty of fibers, and even protein. It is very beneficial for cats with skin problems and can even be used topically.
Apples
High in vitamin C and fiber, apples are an excellent snack for cats. But pet parents need to make sure that the apples are peeled and given without the skin.
Whole grains
Cats like crunching on whole grains, like couscous. Whole wheat bread crumbs are also a good option.
