5 Types of Prostate Cancer

In most cases of prostate cancer, tumors do not spread to the other parts of the body. While treatment options are available for common cancer types, not much research has been done on the uncommon ones.

Here we will talk about some of the rare and common types of prostate cancer found in men:

  • Adenocarcinoma
Adenocarcinoma accounts for 95-99 percent of all prostate cancer types and is, therefore, one of the common types of prostate cancer. It arises in the glandular cells. This kind of cancer occurs when cell genes start to mutate and begin to multiply. This causes interference with tissue functions. The mutation of the abnormal cells can also cause tumors to grow and extend to other body parts.
  • Prostate cancer of the small cell
Prostate cancer of the small cell is one of the rare forms of prostate cancer. It can rapidly spread to other parts of the body. It doesn’t produce PSA because of its aggressive nature. This means a transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) or biopsy is required to diagnose the small cell’s prostate cancer.

In most cases, the small cell’s prostate cancer is diagnosed only at an advanced stage when it has spread to other parts of the body. In the case of small cell prostate cancer, several treatment options are offered, including chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy, and a combination of hormone and chemotherapy.

  • Ductal prostate cancer
Ductal prostate cancer, also known as ductal adenocarcinoma, is a rare type of glandular prostate cancer. In most cases, men with this kind of cancer exhibit normal levels of PSA. Cancer growth occurs near the urethra because it causes the urethra to narrow down and subsequently cause difficulty in urinating. It may even lead to blood in urine as well. Many times, it is diagnosed when a man undergoes TURP. In this surgery, the tissue is removed, and a microscope is used to examine the tissue.
  • Transitional cell carcinoma
Transitional cell carcinoma is a rare type of prostate cancer. It is also known as urothelial cancer and starts in the bladder, cells lining the urethra, and the surrounding structures. Transitional cell carcinoma may begin in the prostate and then subsequently spread to the bladder. The primary tumors primarily develop in the urethra, then the bladder break off takes place, and it then starts spreading locally. It is often symptomized by difficulty in urine or blood in the urine.
  • Acinar adenocarcinomas
It amounts to roughly 9 out of 10 adenocarcinomas and leads to an increase in PSA (prostate-specific antigen) levels. It develops in acini cells. It is a common type of cancer which occurs in the prostate gland and lung.

So, these were some of the rare and common types of prostate cancers. One can consult their doctor for treatment options available for them.
